Most of these settings will be set and forgotten, but you'll need to make sure that they are correct before your camera will work with a Capture kit.
Memory Card
- You must have a memory card on your camera. The faster, the better – if your card is slow, it will take longer for Capture to download the images from your camera and will slow down the entire system.
- Your memory card cannot be full; partly because you need space to store new images, and also because if you have 100GB worth of old images on the card, the Capture device needs to sort through those images in order to find a new image. A full card clogs the process and can cause performance issues.
WiFi / Bluetooth off
If your camera has WiFi/Bluetooth, please turn it off so that it does not interfere with other signals.
Auto Power off / Standby Timer
Set the timer to greater than 20 minutes so that the Capture kit can stay in contact with the camera. If the camera goes to sleep, the connection with Capture needs to be restored before images can be uploaded.
Why 20 minutes? If there is a continuous period of 20 minutes of inactivity, the Capture device will shut down to save battery – at this point, it is ok for the camera to go to sleep too.
Image aspect ratio
Our system is expecting 3:2 ratio images to upload, if you need to use a different ratio, please contact us to ensure that you have appropriate adjustments in place prior to use.
Image Rotation/Auto Rotate
If this is turned off, there will be no metadata in the images to tell whether they are portrait or landscape, and can cause issues with watermarks. Make sure it is turned on either for both camera and computer or just for the computer.
If images come into the system rotated incorrectly, it is possible to rotate each image using our online editor... but you cannot make bulk edits in Console.
Picture Style
If you typically only photograph in RAW, you probably haven't changed this setting from neutral. Since we are delivering images Straight Out Of the Camera, you should select a Picture Style setting that gives the JPEG images a level of color and contrasts that you are happy with. For reference, we tend to use the 'Standard' setting on a Canon 5Dmk3.
Image Quality
Capture will only download JPEG files, so you must have JPEG files saved to at least one of the memory cards.
Below are some examples of resolution/file size/print size. We recommend using the smallest practical file size in order to save time uploading and to keep your data costs down.
Canon 5Dmk3 | Image Resolution | File Size (approx.) | Prints to (@250dpi) |
---|---|---|---|
S1 Small JPEG | 2880x1920 (5.5Megapixels) | 1.5MB | 11.5"x7.5" approx A4 |
Medium JPEG | 3840x2560 (9.8Megapixels) | 3MB | 15"x10" approx A3 |
Large JPEG | 5760x3840 (22Megapixels) | 5MB | 23"x15" approx A2 |
|
Notes: If you have a very high-resolution camera you may have settings that create files larger than 15MB. Files this size will be excessive to your needs, drain the Capture battery faster, and could cause performance issues. |
Saving Multiple JPEG + RAW (Canon and Nikon Only)
If you wish to save RAW files in addition to the JPEG files which are used for Capture, we recommend using a camera with dual card slots and setting them to ‘Record Separately’. This will allow you to save JPEG to one card, and RAW to the other card.
If you only have one memory card, make sure your camera is set to save both RAW and JPEG to the same card. Our system will ignore the RAW files and copy the JPEG files. The process will be slightly slower because the camera is writing two files before we can copy the JPEG, but it is an option.
If you want to shoot with in-camera backups, you can 'Record to Multiple' and save JPEG or both RAW & JPEG to both memory cards. Capture will identify the JPEG image on each memory card but will only upload the smaller of the two JPEG's – so please ensure that you are not saving identically sized JPEG's... otherwise Capture will save and upload both!
|
Notes: When saving multiple copies of images (eg RAW + JPEG on Record to Multiple) there will be a small performance impact because we need to wait for the camera to finish saving 4 different image files before we can begin working our magic. |
