Best Practices for Background Removal

All images are not created equal. Some images lend themselves to quick and easy background removal, while others...not so much. To ensure your images have a fighting chance, read our tips below.
Fotomerchants background removal is not recommended for groups, you can however test this on your own group images to see if you are happy, results may vary.

Maximum image resolution & file size Currently, images in .jpg format with a file size of up to 12 megabytes and/or 50 megapixels are supported.  The maximum supported output resolution is 25 megapixels (ex: 6250 × 4000 or any other aspect ratio). Images larger than that are automatically resized. Returned knocked-out png files will not be larger than 10 megapixels. For preview images, the maximum output resolution is 0.25 megapixels (ex: 625 × 400).

Best Practices for Background Removal

• Images taken under good lighting conditions and with a high contrast between foreground and background give better results.

• Make sure to upload images with the correct orientation. Results are best if they match gravity (ex: the ground is at the bottom of the image-- this isn't the time to dabble in abstract).

• Single-color backgrounds are easier to remove than sharp backgrounds with many details.

• Single or small group images currently perform better than photos of large groups of people, however we do not recommend relying on this for groups (sorry class photos!).

• Especially for our sports photographers: small objects held in hands or worn on the body are usually supported (ex: a basketball), whereas large objects standing out are problematic.
